What is CrossFit exactly?
The core movements of life. CrossFit builds on movements like balancing, lifting, squatting, jumping and running. You know, things you used to do as a kid. We just take these movements and create constantly changing workouts to get our bodies moving like they used when we were younger and to build strength at the same time.
CrossFit workouts are designed so that everyone has to work on both their strengths and weaknesses. The great part about this is that if we aren’t so great at doing something, we can scale the workout so that we can build up to our goals in a safe way.
Let’s say you aren’t great at running or jumping, maybe because you don’t really like doing those things or you have some physical challenges like sore knees. No worries! You can walk the run part and you can step up on a small box instead of jumping. Everything we do in CrossFit can be tailored to what your body can do now so you can get stronger and are more able to progress to where you want to be.
How can CrossFit help me?
CrossFit helps everyone in 3 ways:
This goes without saying that the most obvious way CrossFit helps people is through feeling better in everyday life. Once you start working out, you will notice you will feel better. You might be a little tired or sore from the workouts at first but our bodies were meant to move and within a short period of time, a lot of us who are in CrossFit find we just feel better overall. Our bodies feel really good. That feeling is what brings us back workout after workout.
Surprised? Many people are surprised at how CrossFit helps them feel better mentally too. When you physically start to feel better, you mentally do too. CrossFit not only gets our adrenaline pumping in our bodies, but it also gives us a great feeling mentally that lasts long after the workout is done.
Bored? Depressed? Sad? A CrossFit workout can help make those feelings less intense. Moving our bodies helps move those feelings so we start feeling better. If you’re unsure this is the case, come try a class and see for yourself.
Oh ya – you will also gain confidence and surprise yourself at what you can actually accomplish. So many of us have marveled at how we can do things that we never thought we could do – we might be able to do things now as adults that we weren’t able to do as kids! That surprise and confidence just builds on itself workout after workout.
Many of us came to CrossFit Odeon to get more fit or to lose weight or to get stronger. What we found is a community that encourages us to dream big and supports us step-by-step as we scale up to our goals.
On those days when we don’t really feel like working out or are not really “feeling it”, it’s the community that supports us, encourages us to try our best and to push ourselves just that little bit more. It’s often on days like that we hit new personal bests or are able to do things that we weren’t able to do just the week before.
“When I started CrossFit everything seemed impossible but I have never let any skill beat me. I will keep working on it until I get better and achieve my goal.”
Mark Smith, adaptive athlete
What do I need to try CrossFit?
Not much, actually! But there are a few things which can make your first time at CrossFit Odeon a lot better – an open mind, a willingness to learn and being able to smash some beliefs you hold about what you can actually do.
In terms of equipment, it’s pretty simple – gym or running shoes, t-shirt, shorts or workout pants. That’s it!
Who is CrossFit for?
Ready for this? EVERYONE! Because every workout can be scaled from simple movements to more complex ones and because we do so many different movements in a workout, everyone can find that CrossFit fits them.
Remember a lot of CrossFit movements you are already doing in your life – balancing (like when you stretch overhead to get something down), lifting (like picking up groceries), squatting (to either a chair or the toilet!), running (ok scale this back to walking perhaps) and jumping (scale this to walking up stairs). Whatever you can do now for these movements in your everyday life, can be built upon with the coach’s help at CrossFit Odeon.
Before you read the next section – we just want to say that if we haven’t been clear enough that CrossFit is for everyone – we will say it again – CrossFit is for EVERYONE. You don’t need to be in shape to come. You can have bad knees, sore shoulders and aching feet. Our coaches are trained to scale workouts to accommodate YOUR physical challenges. Seriously. Come try a class and see.
When should I join CrossFit Odeon?
As soon as you make the decision that you want to make a change or try something new. Our coaches are trained in all the ways that CrossFit workouts can be scaled to make sure you reach your goals. All you need to do is decide that you are ready to make a change or try something new. Our coaches and fellow members are here to help support you in that decision.
